US Teen Gets Life For Killing 9-Year-Old Neighbour
[ US teen gets life for killing 9-year-old neighbour ] - A US teenager who confessed to strangling, cutting and stabbing a nine-year-old neighbour because she wanted to know how it felt to kill someone has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Alyssa Bustamante, 18, had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the October 2009 slaying of Elizabeth Olten in their small Missouri town. In her diary, she described the experience as "pretty enjoyable". Bustamante had been charged with first-degree murder. By pleading guilty to the lesser charges, she avoided a trial and the possibility of spending her life in an adult prison with no chance of release. Bustamante was 15 when she confessed to strangling Elizabeth, repeatedly stabbing her in the chest and slicing the......... Click here to read full story.

Boko Haram: Bombs Rock Military Base in Kaduna
[ Boko Haram: Bombs rock military base in Kaduna ] - A man dressed in military uniform, driving a Toyota Sienna bus. He was stopped by soldiers on guard duty, but the driver coasted through the first gate of the fortified military base. That was unusual. The soldiers opened fire. Then, an explosion. A bomb had gone off, killing the lone driver who turned out to be a suicide bomber. It all happened yesterday at the Army's 1 Division's Dalet Barracks in Kaduna. The city was shaken by three explosions within and around military formations. The explosions started at about 11.45 am - at the Dalet Barracks. Another explosion occurred 15 minutes later close to the main gate of the Nigeria Air Force Base about 1000 metres away from the scene of the first blast. At about 12.15, as residents were battling to overcome the shock of the multiple blasts, another occurred under the flyover in Kawo, about 100 metres away from the scene of the first blast and close to the Tuesday Kawo market, which was in session. The market and its surroundings were thrown into confusion as residents and traders ran helter skelter. Parents hurried to school to fetch their kids. The Kaduna Polytechnic cancelled a scheduled examination and sent students home. The government was rumoured to have imposed......... Click here to read full story.

Israel General Strike Shuts Airports, Economy
[ Israel general strike shuts airports, economy ] - Israel's main labour union went on strike on Wednesday shutting airports, ports, banks and the stock market after talks with the government failed to produce an agreement on the status of contract workers. The Histadrut labour federation, the umbrella organisation for hundreds of thousands of public sector workers, said the strike - estimated by the Treasury to cost the economy $500 million (316 million pounds) a day - would also halt trains and close the Bank of Israel and government offices. Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv was shut for......... Click here to read full story.

Millions Risk Hunger in South Sudan
[ Millions risk hunger in South Sudan - U.N. ] - Conflict, population displacement and high food prices mean millions of people in South Sudan face hunger this year, two U.N. food agencies said on Wednesday. The number of people with insecure food supplies has risen to 4.7 million in 2012 from 3.3 million in 2011, a report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP) said. Of those, about one million people are severely food insecure, and that number could double if fighting continues and prices keep rising, the report said. "This is a rapidly approaching crisis that the world cannot afford to ignore," said WFP country director Chris Nikoi. South Sudan became independent in July under a 2005 peace agreement with its former civil war foe, Khartoum, but has been struggling to......... Click here to read full story.
