Voice Of Biafra Hits The Waves
By Chief Charles O. Okereke, Nigeria Masterweb
A short wave radio broadcast service 'Voice of Biafra International (VOBI)' was born on September 1, 2001, in the U.S. capital city, Washington DC. VOBI transmits on Saturdays for about an hour, on 12.125 MHz, equivalent to 24.74 Meter Band at 1900 Hours UTC (Universal Time [Coordinated]). The equivalent time in Nigeria is 8.00pm. Its goal we gathered 'is to provide and disseminate news and information of relevance and pressing import to Igbo-Biafra, and to the rest of the world, using short wave radio.'
Here are excerpts from VOBI inaugural broadcast of September 1, 2001, "Let us pray. Great and gracious God, like the children of Israel, we, the children of Biafra, know You have witnessed our sufferings and afflictions in Nigeria. For nearly forty years now we have been wandering in the Nigerian desert, neglected and persecuted... We will enter the promised land singing Thy praise, for after bondage comes freedom, after death comes resurrection..." It continued with, "The State of Biafra will be ruled on the principle of social and economic justice for all." and "Biafra is your right...Biafra is your hope." VOBI broadcasts are also available on the Web.
VOBI according to information available to our news desk, is a pet project of Biafra Foundation, Ekwe Nche and Biafra Actualization Forum. On September 29, 2001, in Washington DC, Biafra Foundation in association with the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) officially commissioned BIAFRA HOUSE. According to the founders of the landmark, Biafra House, is symbolically the embassy of Biafra in the United States, and represents a needed official location in the United States from where the cause of Biafra is to be vigorously pursued. This they summarized in these words, "essentially, Biafra House is about Biafran issues and interests in Nigeria, the USA and in the wider world." It is uncertain where VOBI is housed, but its correspondences are channeled through Biafra Foundation address, email, and phone number.Related Story: The PR War
