[ Masterweb Reports ] - Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, has called for more time for Nigerians in Diaspora to obtain their Bank Verification Number (BVN).

Dabiri-Erewa also urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) to put modalities and logistics in place to make it easier for Nigerians abroad to obtain it.

"I hereby appeal to CBN to look into the challenges Nigerians living abroad are facing in getting their BVN done and extend the deadline for them to get the BVN done,’’ she said.

Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja by her media aide, Alhaji Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said that the request for extension of deadline was to prevent forfeiture of their savings.

The presidential aide also pleaded with the commercial banks to make the procedure easier for their customers living outside the country to be able to meet up with the new deadline.

She said that the appeal became imperative in view of an interim order of forfeiture granted by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Oct. 17 over the matter.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja had ordered 19 commercial banks to show cause within 14 days why the balances in such accounts should not be forfeited.

The court had also directed them to file an affidavit of disclosure before the court, stating the names of the accounts as operated, account numbers and outstanding balances.

She recalled that the Federal Government had on Sept. 28 instituted an action in court for the forfeiture of any balance in a bank account without a BVN.

"This is why the Attorney-General of the Federation should intervene in this matter to assist Nigerians living abroad who are at disadvantaged by allowing them more time to comply with the BVN directive.

"The present practice is that banks only permit deposits into such accounts. No withdrawal is allowed. Should the Federal Government succeed, the money is forfeited permanently," Dabiri-Erewa said.

She said that Nigerians in the Diaspora had been remitting billions of U.S. dollars back to the country on yearly basis, being the highest on the continent of Africa.

According to her, this has been contributing to the socioeconomic development of the country. (NAN)

[ Masterweb Reports: Isiaka Wakili reports ] - President Muhammadu Buhari said the opposition party in Nigeria is aware of his administration’s achievement in improving the security situation in the North-east.

President Buhari said this yesterday at a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khakan Abbasi, on the margins of the ninth D-8 summit in Istanbul, Turkey.

On the fight against terrorism, President Buhari told the Pakistani Prime Minister that Boko Haram terrorist group remains degraded.

‘’We have moved them out from their strongholds in the North East, we have denied them space and even their attacks on soft targets are becoming less often.

‘’Even the opposition [party] recognises that there is a considerable improvement of security in the North East,’’ the president said, according to a statement by his spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu.

He said the Nigeria-Pakistan Joint Commission will be revamped as a veritable platform to strengthen economic and trade relations between both countries.

The president, who expressed satisfaction at the level of defence and military cooperation between both countries, however agreed with the Prime Minister that there was still room to do more.

He regretted that same could not be said on the economic and trade fronts, which he said had fallen far short of what can be achieved by both countries.

‘’Nigeria-Pakistan cooperation is very historical. Military training has been very consistent and I am impressed by the efficiency of officers trained in Pakistan. But the performance of our countries in relation to trade and industrial cooperation has been very disappointing,’’ Buhari said.

The president noted that Nigeria had failed to use past earnings to create a commensurate level of socio-economic development, assuring that his administration had identified the problems, and was ardently working to promote national development through international trade, industrial growth and the improvement of infrastructure.

The president urged Pakistan to take full advantage of the new climate of investment promoted by his administration.

‘’There are a lot of opportunities for us to harness in the manufacturing sector, agriculture, commerce, solar energy and the electricity sector,’’ Buhari said.

In his remarks, Abbasi said both countries had similar prospects and challenges, including large population, key regional players in economy and security; the fight against terrorism, improving governance and the domestic economy.

He said Pakistan will continue to share experiences with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism towards developing effective strategies and results.

In line with this promise, the Pakistani Prime Minister presented a manual on strategy and tactics of dealing with terrorism to the President, which he said, had been put together by his country’s army.

He also requested President Buhari to undertake a state visit to Pakistan at the earliest possible time.

[ Masterweb Reports: Emma Elekwa reports ] - Two persons were reported dead at the weekend following a clash between the police and a vehicle driver at Tarzan junction, Nkpor, along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway in Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra state.

Daily trust gathered from police source that the police patrol team on stop-and-search duties at the Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) roundabout, had at about 6pm, flagged down the deceased with a Camry car for routine check.

The source said the deceased refusal to stop as directed, led to his being pursued by the police team and was later accosted at Tarzan Junction, Nkpor amidst traffic build-up.

"In a bid to search the vehicle properly, a melee ensued and the driver was shot by police, who unfortunately died on the spot," the source said.

According to the source, fifteen bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from the vehicle after a thorough search.

The source further added that the death of the driver attracted a group of angry youths who quickly mobilized and set ablaze a security pick-up van approaching the junction, while the driver of the vehicle escaped unhurt.

Daily trust however gathered that a conductor on an articulated trailer which was approaching the scene of the incident, suddenly jumped down from the truck, on sighting the angry mob and was crushed to death by a hit-and-run driver of an on-coming vehicle.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State police Command, Nkeiru Nwode, said some miscreants, ignorant of the true facts behind the incident, took advantage of the situation for a mob action.

She said all the police officers involved in the unfortunate incident are currently in custody where they are undergoing interrogation.

"The Command wishes to use this medium to warn against spreading false rumors targeted at heating up the polity as the incident has no connection with any political party or its activities.

"We wish to also appeal to members of the public especially those who witnessed the incident to feel free to provide useful information to the police in arresting the fleeing hit-and-run driver," she said.
