[ Masterweb Reports ] - Atiku Abubakar, former Nigeria Vice President today in a press statement said he was dumping All Progressives Party (APC) for People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Below is Atiku's statement in full

On the 19th of December, 2013, I received members of the All Progressives Congress at my house in Abuja. They had come to appeal to me to join their party after my party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had become factionalized as a result of the special convention of August 31, 2013.

The fractionalization of the Peoples Democratic Party on August 31, 2013 had left me in a situation where I was, with several other loyal party members, in limbo, not knowing which of the parallel executives of the party was the legitimate leadership.

It was under this cloud that members of the APC made the appeal to me to join their party, with the promise that the injustices and failure to abide by its own constitution which had dogged the then PDP, would not be replicated in the APC and with the assurance that the vision other founding fathers and I had for the PDP could be actualized through the All Progressives Congress.

It was on the basis of this invitation and the assurances made to me that I, being party-less at that time, due to the fractionalization of my party, accepted on February 2, 2014, the hand of fellowship given to me by the All Progressives Congress.

On that day, I said "it is the struggle for democracy and constitutionalism and service to my country and my people that are driving my choice and my decision" to accept the invitation to join the All Progressives Congress.

Like you, I said that because I believed that we had finally seen the beginnings of the rebirth of the new Nigeria of our dreams which would work for all of us, old and young.

However, events of the intervening years have shown that like any other human and like many other Nigerians, I was fallible.

While other parties have purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality that led to fractionalization, the All Progressives Congress has adopted those same practices and even gone beyond them to institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced.

Only last year, a governor produced by the party wrote a secret memorandum to the president which ended up being leaked. In that memo, he admitted that the All Progressives Congress had "not only failed to manage expectations of a populace that expected overnight ‘change’ but has failed to deliver even mundane matters of governance".

Of the party itself, that same governor said "Mr. President, Sir Your relationship with the national leadership of the party, both the formal (NWC) and informal (Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso), and former Governors of ANPP, PDP (that joined us) and ACN, is perceived by most observers to be at best frosty. Many of them are aggrieved due to what they consider total absence of consultations with them on your part and those you have assigned such duties."

Since that memorandum was written up until today, nothing has been done to reverse the treatment meted out to those of us invited to join the All Progressives Congress on the strength of a promise that has proven to be false. If anything, those behaviours have actually worsened.

But more importantly, the party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people. How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth.

A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people.

I admit that I and others who accepted the invitation to join the APC were eager to make positive changes for our country that we fell for a mirage. Can you blame us for wanting to put a speedy end to the sufferings of the masses of our people?

Be that as it may be, after due consultation with my God, my family, my supporters and the Nigerian people whom I meet in all walks of life, I, Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa, hereby tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress while I take time to ponder my future.

May God bless you and may God bless Nigeria.

[ Masterweb Reports: John Chuks Azu reports ] - The National Industrial Court (NIC) has ordered the immediate reinstatement of former spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Yushau A. Shuaib.

Shuaib was retired from the public service after in 2013 over an opinion article he wrote on former Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The former NEMA spokesman however sued the Finance Minister, Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) and Federal Ministry of Information over the retirement through Barrister James Ode Abah of Bamidele Aturu Legal Chamber.

Justice David Isele of the NIC declared that the letter retiring Shuaib from service has no force of law and is therefore illegal, unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect whatsoever being in flagrant violation of the civil service rules. The judge also ordered the Federal Government to compute and pay within 30 all Shuaib’s salaries, allowances and other emoluments due to him from June 2013 to the judgment date and interest at the prevailing commercial bank’s rate on his total package.

[ Masterweb Reports: Isiaka Wakili reports ] - President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday inaugurated the Audit Committee on Recovery and Management of Stolen Assets within and outside the country.

Members of the committee are, Olufemi Jinadu, Chinyere Bibiogha and Mohammad Nami.

Buhari said his administration embarked on tracing and recovery of all stolen assets within and outside Nigeria using legal and diplomatic resources at its disposal.

He said the gains of his administration’s initiatives over the past two and a half years had been obvious as evident in the level of investigation, prosecution and forfeitures involving both public and private sector officials in the country.

Buhari said the message had therefore been passed loud and clear that "Never again as a nation are we going to allow the wanton diversion and embezzlement of public funds to private pockets."

He said Nigerians would further recall that pursuant to requisite directives, recovered assets were progressively being returned to designated accounts by the anti-graft agencies and other agencies of government involved with the process.

"In the course of implementing this exercise and given the number of agencies who are concurrently pursuing specialized initiatives and making recoveries for government, it has become obvious that fundamental gaps still exist in ensuring that the recovered assets are accounted for, and managed in an accurate, transparent and logical manner," he said.

The President explained that it was in realization of this that he directed, earlier in the year, that all agencies should send in detailed reports of all their recovered assets as at March 2017.

He said the decision to inaugurate the audit committee was therefore the next step in ensuring that all returns filed by the various agencies were accurate and consistent with actual recoveries made. He said the committee was therefore expected to judiciously undertake an audit of all recovery accounts established by government agencies from the date of opening such accounts up to 10th April, 2017.

The president said he looked forward to receiving the committee’s report and recommendations in due course, wishing them the best of luck in their assignment.

[ Masterweb Reports: Emma Elekwa reports ] - The Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano has raised alarm over the sudden withdrawal of his security details, saying such action has exposed his life to danger.

Obiano who stated this on Tuesday in Awka during an election stakeholders meeting organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), described the act as unacceptable and a dangerous signal on what was to happen ahead of the governorship election.

He demanded for the immediate return of the security details in order not to constitute further threats capable of overheating the polity.

"I want my security details returned immediately because I am going to start a fight from there. I am the governor of Anambra state and all the paraphernalia of my office must be there.

"This is unacceptable and a sign of what will happen. Those behind this would be dissapointed because we are very ready for the election," he insisted.

According to the governor, he had wanted to speak with the Inspector General of police who was scheduled to be at the occasion, but said he had to voice it out in the event since he was not aware when he would come.

The governor had earlier complained of having not been accorded recognition by the moderator when he worked in, despite several insistence.

But reacting, the National Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said the event was a stakeholders' meeting, and as such no candidate would be accorded any special treatment regardless of his position.

He said the commission insists on equal treatment of all candidates in the election and should not only have equal standing, but must be respected.

The Inspector General of police, Idris Mohammed was yet to arrive at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, venue for the event while filling this report.

[ Masterweb Reports: Emma Elekwa reports ] - There was tension on Monday at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Awka Anambra state, following a suspected bomb scare in the area.

Daily trust gathered that two substances suspected to be bomb explosives were sighted in the commission's premises, which triggered fears among the staff and visitors alike.

It was also learnt that the alleged explosives were planted near the gate of the commission in the early hours of the day before bomb disposal experts came to the rescue.

When our correspondent visited the INEC office, there was heavy presence of military personnel deployed to the premises with two trucks positioned at the two entrances to the road leading to the office to forestall any danger.

When contacted, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner REC, Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, said there was no case of bomb explosives at the commission's office.

He said a substance was found outside the premises, adding that it was the duty of the police to confirm whether it was bomb explosives device or not.

"You know people can drop anything within the office especially this period just to score some point. The police should be in the position to ascertain whether or not it was such device," he said.

On her part, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Princess Nkeiruka Nwode, said she was not aware of the development.

She said the presence of bomb disposal unit experts at the INEC office was part of preparations for the Saturday governorship election.
