[ Masterweb Reports: Hope Abah reports ] - The Police in Benue State yesterday confirmed the recovery of more bodies totaling 10 from communities which came under gunmen’s attack in Gwer West Local Government Area of the state.

At least four communities of Mbapupuu, Mbapa, Mbachhphon and Enger all in Agagbe District of the local government had come under attack in the early hours of Thursday.

The State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had earlier confirmed two persons killed by suspected bandits believed to have fled Zamfara State and other neighbouring countries at the wake of security offensives against them.

Owoseni however said yesterday that eight bodies were found in the bush around Tse-Adudu and Enger villages in addition to the two that were earlier removed from the same area.

He said "They were believed to be victims of armed bandits, suspected to be cross-border insurgents or cattle rustlers. The Mobile Police Force Unit deployed in Naka general area, had in the course of their patrols encountered the same Insurgents."

According to him, security operations in the affected areas and other communities in the state have been stepped up with reinforcement of the Police Special Forces on Counter Insurgency to curb the criminal activities of the armed marauders.

[ Masterweb Reports: Press Release For Immediate Release ] - As parts of efforts to ensure hitch-free 2019 elections, the League of Progressive Ambassadors of Nigeria (LEPAN), a non-partisan civic organisation, has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on how to go about achieving rancour-free elections next year. This was contained in a statement signed by the group’s publicity secretary, Seun Okegbemiro today in Lagos.

"We must first commend INEC for the relative success of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide. From the data available from our field officers monitoring the process in several states of the Federation, the CVR has been a remarkable success even though there are areas that need to be improved.

"We feel particularly disappointed with several avoidable logistic failures such as non-functional printers, Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines, and poor staff attitudes toward potential voters and registrants were some of the numerous complaints our field observers reported. We, therefore, urge INEC to ensure these anomalies are corrected so that more Nigerians can register and participate in the democratic process." Mr Okegbemiro said.

"On our part" the statement continued "we have offered to get volunteers for INEC if staff shortage is one of the reasons for the seemingly slow registration process which sometimes see a potential registrant spend up to 40 minutes on the average to get registered. This should not be the case in this digital age." The group said.

The group also admitted that there have been "technical and political improvements" in the electoral process since the 2015 elections.

"We should not forget that there have been some significant technical and political improvements in conducting successful elections under the current INEC management with the conduct of several gubernatorial, National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly by-elections. These elections themselves are not idyllic but simply show we are better than we were about four years ago." The group noted.

"We on our part will have preferred a situation where INEC should, by now, be thinking of electronic voting since there have been several opportunities for INEC to test this method with the past few elections but unfortunately failed to do so. If those elections have been conducted using the e-Voting, by now, the fears about multiple voting, ballot stuffing, and post-election violence that accompany major elections would have been minimized, if not wiped away by now." The statement charged.

"Our e-Voting proposal is for people to vote via a prescribed machine and same will record their votes and stored digitally through a safe storage medium before being sent to a centralized location (or database) where tabulation programs compile and tabulate results. We understand past attempts have been marred by technical problems such as electronic fingerprint readers malfunctioning on Election Day. We are also aware that there have been several reports of biometric voter systems failures but we insist these problems account for just a little over 0.25% of, say, card readers malfunctioned if data from INEC are anything to go by." Okegbemiro said.

On the recently passed #NotTooYoungToRun Bill, Mr Okegbemiro said "The #NotTooYoungToRun Bill has become a national emergency. We are using this medium to plead with President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to give his assent to the bill in meaningful time. This is because, the youths will be asking some serious questions during next year’s presidential election. We will want to know why, by now, young people who have intentions to contest elective offices cannot do so simply because the president have not given his assent to a Bill that would ordinarily have made them participate actively."

On the bill, the group said "We have travelled a long route to get this far. We cannot back down at this point when victory is in sight. This is why we are passionately appealing to all well-meaning Nigerian to join us in urging the president to be part of this epoch making event by signing this bill into law."

"While we wait to see INEC and all other electoral actors demonstrate their lessons learnt from some of these past experiences, we as a responsible and responsive organisation will monitor the process and come out with an elaborate report afterwards. We cannot accept anything short of a free, fair, and transparent process."

Signed.

[ Masterweb Reports: Chris Chukwu writes President Buhari ] - Letter To His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari: As a good father has the responsibility to advice his child rightly, so as a good child is expected to do same in other to maintain a healthy and happy family.

I know so many persons will be asking what is Chris Chukwu up to again, but one thing I have learnt from *Young African Leaders Initiative Network* is that the only way to stand out from the crowd is to stand for something special.

Your excellency Sir, I write this letter to draw your attention to the youths who have been said to be the future of tomorrow, they are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but the partners of today. I believe the future is right here with us and we need to act accordingly for the best interest of our dear country.

I'm writing this letter in other to be involve in the process that will help the present administration to bring the change we desire in Nigeria and also emerge as the best across the globe.

Sir, as a good father who is ready to listen to his son, I will love you to be the best of all best, I will love you to champion the crusade that will make Nigeria one big family, I will love you to make Nigeria the envy of all nations, I will love you to be the next record breaker across the globe.

I want to first of all commend your effort in fighting and curtailing corruption and insurgency in Nigeria, so many Nigerians who wine and dine in corruption have really learnt their lessons.

Corruption has eaten so deep into the country which has led to poor infrastructure, Increased cost of goods and services, Increased poverty, shoddy work and stalled projects, poor medical services, reduced investments in our economy, unemployment, rise in crime rate and insecurity, delay denial and sale of justice in our public land, property and utilities, social unrest and negative international image. All these has seriously affected Nigerians, most especially the youths negatively.

My humble advice to you, Mr President, is to intensify the fight against corruption, without fear or favour, without sentiments, no matter the tribe and political inclinations.

I will love you to take advantage of these corrupt individuals and ensure they are brought to book. Also, ensure that the treasures recovered from them are invested and well utilized in areas that will enhance the economy for the benefit of the country.

Nigeria will be next to no country if corruption is totally eliminated.

The youths have therefore, been historically notable change agents and drivers of societal transformation. Contemporarily, however, especially in the developing democracies, the trend has been that of relegation of youth interests and roles, thereby pushing the youth more into poverty, alienation, and turning them into agents of destabilization and conflicts, especially in diverse developing countries.

According to Kailash Satyarthi, "The power of youths is the common wealth for the entire world. The faces of young people are the faces of our past, our present and our future. No segment in the society can match with the power, idealism, enthusiasm and courage of the young people".

There is a dire shortage of young persons occupying the political realm, either because of disempowerment, or alienation, or their perception that their involvement would not matter.

Statistics has shown that more than half of the Nigeria population is under 30 years of age, and yet they're restricted from running for office, even though they can vote.

Nigeria needs to adopt a "positive youth development approach", which recognizes the youths as active participants in societal development.

The goals of Youths empowerment, as identified by UNESCO, are to nurture in the youth values, ideals and notable skills as follows:

- Positive sense of self
- Self-control
- Decision making skills
- Moral system of belief

- Pro-social connectiveness

We must work hard in all respects to empower our youth in the Nigerian political economy.

I encourage you Mr. President to become a Hero by signing the NOT TOO YOUNG TO RUN bill. Signing this bill will go a long in giving our youths a sense of belonging thereby making Nigeria a great nation.

I will like you to use your opportunity as the President to champion the crusade of mentoring, fathering, empowering the youths and making Nigeria the best place to be.

I am Chris Chukwu,

Medical Laboratory Scientist,
I just want to make healthy sense (HEALTHY SENSE WITH CHRIS CHUKWU)

[ Masterweb Reports: Henry Ebireri reports ] - South-South leaders on Friday criticized the suspended deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade. Timi Frank for using the ruling party as a vehicle for self-promotion.

They also described his comment on the extension of the tenure of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee (NWC) for another 12 months as shitty and ugly.

"The tenure extension did not violate the provisions of the constitution, the Electoral Act and the constitution of the party".

In a statement in Port-Harcourt, the leaders described the national chairman of the ruling party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as a decent person.

They praised the national chairman for promoting the president's agenda, revitalizing the country’s democracy through internal democracy and encouraging progressives to look to the beliefs they share.

"Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is good in terms of organizational management" the leaders said.

Signed by the chairman, South-South Front, Chief John Harry, the leaders praised the ruling party for reaching agreement and retaining a strong class of leaders.

"The era of consensus politics is here. The tenure extension is democratic. APC is on the right side of history"

Oyegun also earned unvarnished praise from the leaders for the efficiency of the Government and the fundamental direction of its policy.

The leaders called the suspended deputy national publicity secretary a disgrace to the South-South.

"The ruling party detests discrimination. Frank’s suggestion on the way forward for the ruling party is a recipe for chaos. He is only interested in fragmentation and conflict" the leaders said.

They urged APC members to project the image of the party in its true perspective to counter the negative picture being presented by Okere Uzochukwu, Timi Frank and others.

"PDP is in the worst shape. PDP ratings have continued to tumble since 2015. The party has become toxic, failing to connect with the people. It will be wiped out in 2019" the leaders said.

Happy with the performance of the ruling party, the leaders added"APC is a product already built and tested through elections."

[ Masterweb Reports: Isiaka Wakili reports ] - President Muhammadu Buhari said the death of South-African anti-apartheid icon, Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, was a huge loss to Africa. The president said this in a statement yesterday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu.

Buhari said the deceased was a woman of uncommon determination, steadfastness and perseverance who held aloft the torch of the struggle against institutionalised discrimination even while her ex-husband, the late Madiba, President Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.

Buhari, on behalf of the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, commiserated with the family of the deceased, the government and people of South Africa, urging them to be consoled by the knowledge that the late Winnie Mandela’s contributions to ending apartheid would not be forgotten.

According to him, the late Mrs Mandela remained a pride not only to the African woman, but indeed all Africans.

The president prayed that almighty God comfort all those mourning the departed and grant her soul eternal rest.
