[ Masterweb Reports: Abdullateef Aliyu reports ] - 401 stranded Nigerians in Libya have been deported in less than 24 hours in continuation of the massive repatriation of Nigerians in the North African country.
 
This was the largest number of returnees ever repatriated in such a close interval.
 
The first batch of 144 arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport cargo terminal at about 6:45 p.m aboard a BURAQ Air Boeing 737-800 aircraft with registration number 5A - DMG while the second batch conveying 257 returnees arrived around 1:40 a.m.
 
Daily Trust reports that there has been a renewed drive to repatriate all stranded Nigerians from Libya amidst raging report over resurgence of slave trade.
 
No fewer than 1,295 Nigerians in Libya were rescued in November alone with more of them expected to be repatriated before the end of the year following reports that more Nigerian irregular migrants languish in either Libyan cells or deportation camp.
 
The first batch of 144 comprised 102 males and 42 females including infants who were received by agencies of the Federal Government including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), among others.
 
The repatriation of the stranded Nigerians which started in 2016 is in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and International Organization for Migration (IOM) which have been providing the logistics support.
 



The second batch also arrived from Tripoli, Libyan capital with 182 males and 75 females. Among the female returnees were five children and five infants while there were two make children and one male infant.
 
NEMA South-West Coordinator, Sulaiman Yakubu who represented the DG, Engr. Mustapha Maihaja disclosed that there were four medical cases on board.
 
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri - Erewa and Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Ambode were at the airport to receive the returnees. Dabiri- Erewa said the Federal Government has deepened awareness campaign against irregular migration.
 
Also speaking, the National Commissioner of NCFRMI, Hajia Sadiya Umar - Faruk represented by the South- West Coordinator, Mrs. Margaret Ukegbu disclosed that more exercises are expected this month to bring back all stranded Nigerians in Libya as promised by the Federal Government.
 
She said, "They (returnees) were happy to be home and many of them said that they would not think of embarking on any such irregular journey again".
