[ Masterweb Reports ] - Earlier today, the internet was awash with news of purported injecting of school pupils with Monkey Pox by the military in Anambra State as it carries out its medical exercise. Anonymous internet users, especially on forums, who claimed to have witnessed the goings-on, said that pupils in Nnewi town were seen running helter-skelter with some parents withdrawing their children from schools in the pandemonium. Other social media sources reported that some people have been shot dead by the army when pupils refused to be injected on grounds that they have been told of the military’s intention to kill them via the philanthropic gesture.

However, from the information on Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) Facebook page, the representative of the GOC, 82 division Enugu, Brigadier General J. O Ugwuoke, while addressing the press at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Ozubulu, venue of the Army's free medical outreach in Anambra state, said that the exercise was part of their Coperate Social Responsibility and that the free medical outreach had earlier taken place in Enugu, Imo, Abia and Ebony States respectively.
Furthermore, as ABS reported, the GOC added that, contrary to the rumors in circulation on the social media, the command do not go from school to school or give injection to anybody. He therefore urged the good people of the state to disregard the baseless allegation and rumors.

Below is the script of the government’s press release as extracted from ABS.
The attention of the State Government has been drawn to an ongoing medical outreach being undertaken by the Army in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area.

The State has been made to understand that the exercise is part of Army social responsibility to members of the public.

However, strong apprehension among the populace has followed the exercise leading to withdrawal of students from schools by parents, misconception of actual motive behind the exercise by stakeholders, community leaders and general reservation by the public for whom the outreach is intended.

The exercise has therefore been put on hold.

Parents and guardians are strongly advised to stop withdrawing their wards from schools as the situation has been handled. All schools within the State will remain open as there is no cause for alarm.

Community leaders, President General and Stakeholders are hereby reassured of the commitment of the Governor and the State Government of the wellbeing of Ndi Anambra.

The State Government also strongly condemns observed rhetorics on social media completely misrepresenting the situation with insinuations of spread of diseases and death of students in schools arising from the exercise. The State categorically refutes these rhetorics and confirms there is no death of any student anywhere in the State.

Mischief makers are warned to desist from spreading falsehood. Anambra remains calm and peaceful.
