Aba popularly known as Enyimba City was shut down Tuesday, February 28 in honour of late  Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu whose body was brought to town as part of his burial itinerary. Shops, markets, businesses, banks and schools were all closed. People started streaming into Enyimba Sports Stadium as early as 6.00 am under heavy security scrutiny. There were eight military security checkpoints coordinated by senior army officers between Tenant Road/Georges Road and Stadium Road/School Road. Masterweb News Team was stopped, searched and interrogated at each one of these checkpoints. The team had to park their car on Ehi Road to make their way to the stadium through the rest of security, as they were told by soldiers not to drive beyond Stadium Road/Ehi Road.
 
Security at the stadium gate was made up of combine team of soldiers and police, who for the last time searched and interrogated newsmen, fans and mourners entering the stadium. Thousands of people trooped to Enyimba Stadium, lining streets leading and those adjoining the stadium, singing and showering praises on Ojukwu. Security in and around the stadium was heavy. Several Armoured Personnel Carriers, APC, and patrol vans belonging to the army, police and navy were positioned in and around the stadium.
 



An Air Force helicopter painted in army camouflage colours flew in Ojukwu’s body by a wing outside the stadium gate at 11.09 am. Upon hearing the thundering noise of the helicopter, thousands awaiting screening by the stadium gate tried to force their way through the gate. A combined team of police and the army with whips and batons repelled the crowd, leading to stampede as people fled from the security forces. Many were knocked down, but there were no casualties. 
 
The governors led by T.A. Orji received the corpse at the wing. Newsmen were prevented from getting too close to the Air Force helicopter. At 11. 55 am, the casket bearing Ojukwu's remains, draped in Nigerian national colours of green-white-green, was carried into the stadium by senior army officers amid cheers from the crowd.
