A man used a coin to sexually assault four women after convincing them he had magic healing powers, a court was told today. Solomon Islands-born Joseph Saqu, 44, pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane District Court to three counts of rape, one of indecent dealing and one of stealing on January 20 and February 3 last year.
In his opening address, prosecutor Glen Cash said Saqu befriended four women on Brisbane railway platforms and at shopping centres, convincing them he had magical powers by performing sleight of hand tricks. "He fraudulently convinced these women (that) what he was doing was going to have healing powers or was to assist them to make money which was plainly false," Mr Cash said. He said Saqu befriended a mother and her 16-year-old daughter saying he had magical powers inherited from his grandfather, which he "demonstrated" by turning a railway ticket into a $5 note. Later at their home he would burn his thumb knuckle with a cigarette lighter and then press a 5c coin into his thumb. He then placed the coin on the women's bodies.
Mr Cash said the rape charges related to placing the coin in their vaginas.
The court heard Saqu also befriended a woman and her niece, allegedly indecently assaulting one and raping the other using the coin. He told the older woman he could clear up pigmentation on her skin and placed the coin on her face, mouth and gums before pushing her on the bed and trying to put the coin in her vagina. Saqu allegedly put the coin in the younger woman's mouth and another three on her stomach as she lay down and then got on top of her and put a finger in her vagina.
While performing his "magical powers" Saqu, of Zillmere on Brisbane's northside, invoked a deity he referred to as "RW". He also allegedly stole $250 from the last two women after he promised he could transform it into $8500 overnight.
The trial continues before Judge Brian Boulton.
