"Under Nigeria's NSCDC Amendment Act 2007, Act No. 6, NSCDC was vested the power to "arrest with or without a warrant, detain, investigate and institute legal proceedings by or in the name of the Attorney-General of the Federation in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria against any person who is reasonably suspected to have committed any offence…" To exercise this function effectively, the Act also granted the body power to "maintain an armed squad which shall be entitled to bear arms and deployed by the office of the Commandant-General." The incumbent Commandant- General is Dr. Ade Abolurin. Many critics contend that the granting to bear arms to NSCDC would lead to increased cases of accidental discharge and loss of life. They argue NSCDC is not well trained in the handling of arms. Selected NSCDC officials have undergone intensive federal training on the use of arms and this might form the basis of Egbule Chidozie's article below on reasons why NSCDC should bear arms."

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) so far has been known for its meaningful achievements and commitment in discharging their duties without arms.

NSCDC should be granted the license to carry arms based on the following reasons;

    1. Self Defence: It is a well known fact that any security agent(s) in the whole world is often the first target of any armed bandit or criminal intent person(s). Since NSCDC has provoked many vandals and criminals in Nigeria, it will be risky on their lives if they are not provided with arms.

    2. Crime Combat: NSCDC having been approved and authorized to investigate, arrest, and prosecute, can not implement these tasks effectively without being armed. Such as in the areas of; Kidnappers, Vandals, Armed Robbers, Traffickers, Drug pushers, etc.

    3. Escort/Public Security: Escort of dignitaries and Protection of Lives of the Citizens in Nigeria can not be risked/ jeopardized by not carrying any arm(s). According to our organization’s motto, “Defending the Defenseless”, one can see it that there is no way you can defend the defenseless without being armed.

    4. Riot & Conflict Restoration: Most communities and groups often partake in this act where they use series of weapon to fight each community or government thereby frustrating public and government’s efforts. There is no way to restore such situation without being armed too. Example; Niger Delta Militants, Armed Robbers, etc.

    5. Modern Age Necessity: Belonging to this modern era where most crimes are committed with heavy arms and sophisticated weapons, there is then need to join this modern age by being armed too. Example; Armed Vandals, Niger Delta Militants, etc.

    6. Parade/Quarter-guide: In every Military and Paramilitary organizations, arms like; Gun and Sword are often used in carrying out activities like; Parade, Quarter-guide, Guide of Honour, Arms Training, etc. NSCDC as one the Paramilitary organization need them too for these activities.

    7. Sister Agencies Assistance: There is no way NSCDC can combine or assist other sister organization that are armed in combating crime without being armed too, such as; Nigerian Police, SSS, Nigerian Customs, Nigerian Immigrations, Nigerian Army, etc.

The federal government should please look into this NSCDC pressing need as it will facilitate in achieving the President Yar'adua's 7-point Agenda on “Security” & restore Nigerians Economy.
