FG to petition S. African Embassy
CHARLES ABAH
INDICATIONS
were rife yesterday that the federal government may protest to the South African
Embassy in Nigeria an alleged radio joke on President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Competent sources confirmed to Daily
Champion that government officials were not happy with some remarks on the
President when he visited South Africa last month for the inauguration of South
Africa’s president, Thabo Mbeki’s second coming.
A South African radio station, 94.7
Highveld Stereo presenters, Messrs Revin John and Lloyd de Bruin, had on
April 28, maliciously made some irresponsible remarks that painted President
Obasanjo in bad light.
Although the station’s management has
since reacted to the remarks, by suspending the presenters the SSS may still
demand some explanations from the envoy.
The stations Manager, Ravi Naidoo, had on
www.nigeriamasterweb.com last Saturday said the presenters were taken off air
with immediate effect and without pay for a week following the recommendations
of an internal enquiry.
Meanwhile, the Presenters have apologised
for the unwholesome remarks saying," we hereby unreservedly apologise for making
these irresponsible comments. They were spontaneous and not thought out. No
malice was intended. We hereby also unreservedly apologise to the Nigerian
president and his government."
The station, Daily Champion
gathered is located in the heart beat of Johannesburg where a greater percentage
of Nigerians reside.
